As a child, Shelley wanted to be an Olympic gymnast and a pediatrician. She assisted the gymnastics coaching staff with their teaching responsibilities because she was dedicated to understanding her mistakes, enabling her to help fellow teammates understand and correct their mistakes. As a high school student, she discovered that the sight of blood made her nauseous, dampening her hopes of becoming a pediatrician and working in the medical field.
In her high school math courses, memorization was emphasized more than conceptual understanding, leaving Shelley with a weak foundation. She rectified this by teaching herself to understand mathematical basics. As a college student, Shelley diligently studied to understand mathematics and statistics. She led numerous study sessions, bringing her classmates to a better comprehension of course material. At this time, she also discovered that much medical research relies on mathematical modeling and statistical analysis, providing her with an alternative path to a career in the medical field. However, the desire to provide quality education was already ignited.
Shelley’s aptitude for teaching progressed beyond gymnastics and study sessions. She became a passionate, energetic mathematics and statistics teacher and tutor. She has sincere concern that students truly understand and learn, enabling them to apply concepts to other courses and disciplines. Shelley works hard to break down abstract concepts into understandable, familiar, and more concrete terms, setting challenging goals for herself and her students. She finds that students who never thought understanding mathematics a possibility discover both understanding and success; students with solid mathematical foundations are challenged to understand how and why concepts work.
