College Counselor
Darren Meyers is an educator with over ten years of experience in college admissions guidance. He earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University and holds master’s degrees in Secondary Science Education and Counseling. Before joining HelloCollege, Darren was an Associate Director of College Counseling at a leading independent school in New York City, where he taught physics and coached Ultimate. He enjoys mentoring students and getting to know them as individuals. The hundreds of students Darren has advised have enrolled at a wide range of colleges and universities, including Colleges That Change Lives and the Ivy League®.
Darren Meyers grew up in Scarsdale, NY, an affluent suburb of New York City where the college stickers on the back of cars matter. After graduating from Scarsdale High School, he went to Northwestern University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Darren chose engineering because, as a kid, he loved watching TV shows like This Old House, The New Yankee Workshop, and MacGyver.
After spending the summer after college as a counselor at the boys’ sleepaway camp in Maine he attended as a child, Darren headed to Colorado hoping to use his engineering degree as an outdoor product designer. When his industry contacts from his time in outdoor retail didn’t lead to a job, Darren decided to become a ski instructor. After two fun-filled seasons with the Breckenridge Ski & Ride School, he came back east for graduate school.
Darren holds two master’s degrees: one in Secondary Science Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and another in Counseling, with an emphasis in the school setting, from Manhattan College (now Manhattan University).
Darren taught high school physics for fifteen years before becoming a college counselor. For ten years, Darren was an Associate Director of College Counseling at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School in New York City, where he built strong relationships with admissions officers from colleges across the country. Now, in addition to his role at HelloCollege, Darren works as an independent educational consultant, helping students with the college application process.
Darren lives in Briarcliff Manor, NY, with his wife, their son and daughter, and their Bernedoodle.
