Essay Coach
Theo Armstrong is a Brooklyn-based dancer, writer, and arts administrator. His experience working with international students has made him a driven yet empathetic Essay Coach whose precisely calibrated support allows him to illuminate each student’s unique narrative.
Theo Armstrong is an interdisciplinary performer and writer with 4+ years of college Essay Coaching under his belt. He grew up in Minnesota, surrounded by books and lakes, then attended the University of Iowa, where he earned a BA in English Literature and a BFA in Dance Performance, because one degree couldn’t quite encapsulate his passions.
Theo has worn many hats in his career, including dramaturg, dance teacher, producer, project manager, stage manager, and cabaret host, but his work has primarily explored the intersection between dancing and writing. His most consistent writing practice is performance journalism. He also creates dance theater works for the stage by weaving together text and physical performance.
Searching for more ways to stay connected to his roots, Theo began working as an Essay Coach; he fell in love with college essays’ high-stakes storytelling and the hardworking students who needed direction and encouragement to achieve their dreams. Theo also appreciated getting to know a range of students and their diverse motivations for seeking higher education. From engineers, biochemists, economists, and environmental scientists to visual artists, actors, and English majors, Theo’s curiosity and enthusiasm ensure he has something to offer to just about everyone.
Theo’s writing on performance can be found in Culturebot and The Brooklyn Rail; his creative nonfiction, poetry, and prose can be found in Isele Magazine, Tabula Rasa Review, and elsewhere. He has performed and collaborated with Narcissister, m i c c a, Andrea Haenggi / the Environmental Performance Agency, and others. He’s currently hard at work creating and producing a series of cabaret shows elevating LGBTQIA+ performers.
Never a stranger to life behind the scenes, Theo has also contributed project management, grant-writing, marketing, and administrative support to various performing artists throughout the greater New York area. He enjoys making structure in the midst of chaos and building community around creative labor.
