National Biology Bowl

Since its inception in 2017, the National Biology Bowl has become a valuable platform for academic distinction. While geared toward students in grades six through eight, this science bowl competition offers lasting benefits for students throughout their careers. Here, we will explore the National Biology Bowl so you can make an informed decision about participating in this enriching event.

Exploring the National Biology Bowl

The National Biology Bowl is an online team competition for middle school students that tests kids’ knowledge of biology and life science. Participants are quizzed on a range of advanced subjects, including cell biology, botany, genetics, human physiology, zoology, evolutionary theory, ethology, ecology, and other related topics.

This bowl is the perfect opportunity for younger students to bring out their competitive spirit and test themselves against their peers online. Teams of four to five students from the same school face off against other teams over Zoom. The online setting makes the bowl a little more accessible than other competitions since parents and students won’t have to travel to compete.
The format for the Biology Bowl is a quiz during which students compete against each other in round-robin rounds. Eventually, the top eight teams are chosen from the winners to create a final tournament. If your student makes it this far, they will compete against other top schools in the country for a chance to win the National Biology Bowl.

What Are the National Biology Bowl’s Registration Requirements?

Registering is a straightforward process, provided your student’s school participates in the competition. If their school is not currently involved, your student must assemble a team and secure a coach before entering the fray.

For schools with a Science Olympiad club, adding the national competition to their schedule may be an enticing option. Once the team is ready to compete, the team coach must complete the National Biology Bowl registration, along with a $125 registration fee.

Registration Requirements for the National Biology Bowl

To ensure a smooth registration process for this year’s bowl, please take note of the following requirements:

  • Students must be currently enrolled in middle school.
  • The registration fee must be paid in full before participation.
  • The online registration form must be submitted in the spring of each year.

Guidance for Aspiring Biology Bowl Participants

If this is your first time competing in the National Biology Bowl—or any science competition—consider this advice. Students interested in STEM topics can find these competitions a lot of fun, but you must prepare well to succeed.

  • Research and Create Study Materials: Visit the National Biology Bowl website to identify the topics included in this year’s competition and commence your studies accordingly. Tools such as flashcards, study guides, and multiple-choice questions can significantly augment your knowledge acquisition.
  • Study Collaboratively and Simulate Competitions: Avoid solitary study. Collaborate with your teammates and simulate practice competitions to become familiar with the Bowl’s format. Swift and accurate responses are essential to triumph.
  • Have fun: Though competition can cause stress, it is fundamentally designed to infuse joy and excitement into the lives of science-loving students. Competing against peers provides a unique opportunity for growth and enjoyment.
